1/4″ hardibacker alone is an unsuitable substrate for shower wall tile. If it were attached to properly waterproofed drywall, plywood, or plaster it would be fine. Think about it, one wayward elbow, knee, or hip bump and you may get flexion which would cause the grout (or tile) to crack.
Can you use 1/4 cement board walls?
Floors: A 1/4-inch minimum thickness is needed, but thicker panels are also fine. Walls: Use 1/2-inch or 5/8-inch-thick cement board, not 1/4-inch. The extra thickness is needed when spanning the studs and it provides a solid base for the tile.
Where can I use 1/4 cement board?
1/4″ USG Durock® cement board is an ideal substrate for floor and countertop ceramic tile installations. The 1/4″ thickness helps eliminate transition trim when abutting carpet or wood flooring and minimize level variations with other finish materials.
What size Hardibacker goes on walls?
Cement backer board comes in two standard thicknesses, 1/2 inch and 1/4 inch. The industry standard is to use 1/2-inch-thick backer board on wall tile installations, such as a tub surround.
Can you put Hardibacker over drywall?
With tile showers, in particular, you can have a lifetime guarantee as long as you follow the proper installation methods. While it might sound like a good idea to install cement backer board over drywall before tiling the shower, the reality is that the drywall should be removed beforehand in most instances.
What thickness Hardibacker should I use?
We recommend 1/4 in HardieBacker® board for floor applications, unless 1/2 in thickness is needed for transition. On existing structures: Ensure subfloor is not damaged. Replace any loose, warped, uneven or damaged sections of floor.
Is cement board and Hardie board the same?

Do you need vapor barrier behind cement board?
If it’s a cement board, you need a vapor barrier, because cement retains moisture, which means the wood next to it is always damp.
Do I need thinset under cement board?
Not only is thinset a critical component underneath cement board but the other critical component is the fasteners. And you won’t have the fasteners if you are trying to install it over concrete. On the bright side, there are some options for concrete subfloors.
Can cement board go over drywall?
You should never put a cement board over drywall because water can go through them. Drywalls have poor water resistance and can get mold problems easily. That’s why it’s best not to use them in showers. But you can put them on drywalls in living rooms and such.

Can you use 1/4 inch cement board on floors?

Can Hardie board go directly on studs?

Do you need plywood behind Hardie board?
Fiber cement siding should be installed over plywood, OSB, or sheathing. Be sure that the siding installed is dry. Otherwise, it might shrink at butt joints.
