Spotting harbor seals underwater can be a thrilling treat for scuba divers. These intelligent, curious and playful marine mammals can easily entertain their human visitors for entire dives if they deign to stick around that long.
Are sea lions friendly to humans?
“They’re not trained to be next to people.” California sea lions aren’t normally dangerous to humans, and attacks are uncommon, but they are large and unpredictable wild animals with sharp teeth. A NOAA Fisheries booklet advises people not to feed, approach, chase or otherwise harass sea lions.
While they can look harmless, seals can inflict serious injuries to dogs or people and can carry infectious diseases. It is an offence under the Marine Mammals Protection Act 1978 to disturb, harass, harm, injure or kill a seal.
Do seal bites hurt?
“Part of our job is to protect the people, too,” said Art Yaskin, a Manhattan Beach animal control officer. “No matter how cuddly the seals may look, when they bite it does hurt and there is a big chance of infection. They have microorganisms on their skin that can enter our bodies, too.”
They are the only seals known to regularly hunt and kill warm-blooded prey, including other seals. Although rare, there are a few records of adult leopard seals attacking humans. There has also been one fatality, when a researcher was snorkelling in Antarctic waters and was killed by a leopard seal.

Are GREY seals friendly?
They usually keep a distance from people; however they aren’t shy. On the contrary, they are curious and playful. That means when a grey seal is fed or even petted, they can start playing dangerous biting games. You can compare this to bears: grey seals have a friendly look but remain true predators.
Why seals slap the water?
Under water, males vocalize as part of a mating display. In addition to vocal communication, harbor seals communicate visually by slapping the water with their bodies or pectoral flippers to show aggression. Males may also use this maneuver during courtship.
What does a seal eat?
