Why can’t I use interior stain outside?
Interior lacks the UV protection of the exterior product, so it will fade if exposed to the sun. If not, it will last just as long. And if you re-stain with the same exterior color it will be darker.
What is the difference between interior stain and exterior stain?
Exterior deck stain products often incorporate additional chemicals, such as fungicides, that may be unsafe for interior use. They are formulated for better durability, but produce fumes that simply aren’t appropriate for an indoor environment.
What happens if you use interior varnish outside?
It is fine to use exterior-grade varnish over interior-grade paint when the finished item will remain indoors, but not if it is intended for use outdoors. The exposure to the elements will degrade the paint layer and cause the varnish to fail, even though the varnish is exterior grade.
Can you use interior polyurethane outdoors?
Can You Use Polyurethane Inside or Outside? Most exterior polys can be used indoors, but interior polys should never be used outdoors; they lack the additives that protect exterior finishes from UV rays.
Can stained wood be used outside?

Can water based stain be used outside?

Some water-based product manufacturers claim their stains are more resistant to UV rays than their oil-based counterparts, and therefore last longer without maintenance. However, most water-based stains I’ve used in exterior applications don’t last as long as oil-based products.
Can I put outdoor polyurethane over interior polyurethane?
You can apply exterior polyurethane over interior polyurethane as long as the surface or item that is finished will remain indoors. You shouldn’t use exterior polyurethane over interior polyurethane if you are working on a surface that will be outdoors.

Applying wood stain is an easy way to freshen the look of exterior wood.
Can you use interior stain on pressure treated wood?
Is it OK to stain pressure-treated wood? Yes, it’s ok to stain pressure-treated wood, but you’ll want to wait until the wood is completely dry.
Can you use normal wood stain on decking?
Any exterior wood stain will work, but there are specialist decking stains available that are generally more penetrating and hard-wearing. If the deck gets a lot of foot-traffic you need to make sure it won’t wear off.
Can I use interior paint outside if I seal it?
The short answer is no. Interior paints should not be used outside because they lack the additives necessary to withstand the outdoor elements.
Can I use interior wood varnish outside?
Waterbased interior stains are much more likely to fail. You could try this look on an exterior door that will not receive a lot of sun, but be prepared for more maintenance than usual. It is not recommended.
