Do you need a Birdsmouth on a rafter?
Structurally, a rafter sitting on an angular bearing point (the inclined plane of the ripped strip) would require that the rafter-plate connection deal with the horizontal and vertical components of the force differently than with a birdsmouth.
How are rafters attached?
They are angled or sloped from a center peak to walls on two or more sides. All rafters are attached with framing nails, usually 10d or 12d, driven in with a hammer, but specific installations vary according to the type of roof. Some rafters have metal plates at attachment points for extra support.
Where do you nail rafters?
Drive a toe nail on each side of the rafter just above the birdsmouth into the top plate. Adding more nails than that may split the lumber and weaken the birdsmouth. Add hurricane ties to the connections at the ridge board and top plate.
Do roof rafters need joist hangers?

Metal framing connectors make the best connections. Joist hangers can hang rafters from a ledger, but, for sloping rafters, notch them or use special rafter hangers. If rafters will sit on top of a ledger, attach them with seismic anchors as you would attach rafters to a beam.
What size nails does rafter to ridge board nailing use?
For nailing typical 2x studs to a bottom plate or top plate the UBC requires 4 8d common nails, two per side of the stud. A 3-inch nail or 10d nail would be big enough for most common framing situations.
How big should birdsmouth cut be?
In a properly-cut bird’s mouth, the length of the horizontal or level line (below my two red arrows in the page top photo) should be about equal in length to the width of the top plate.
How do you nail a birdsmouth rafter?
At the birds’ mouth cut of a rafter connecting to the top plate we use three nails per side, two down through the top of the birds’ mouth into the top plate and one (on either side) of the rafter’s vertical portion of the bird’s mouth cut into the face of the top plate.
