Typically, I use the traditional two-step method: apply my stain, wiping off the excess liquid before it dries, then the next day apply a clear finish.
What is a polyshade?

Can PolyShades be used over varnish?
PolyShades can be effectively applied over an existing wood finish as long as that finish is not a lacquer or shellac. Two or more coats of PolyShades are required to ensure a lasting, protective finish.
Can you put Minwax PolyShades over polyurethane?
Method 2: Using Minwax PolyShades. Other than applying gel stain, you can coat over polyurethane with a combination of wood stain and poly. In this case, we recommend PolyShades from Minwax. The product contains wood stain and polyurethane combined.
Is there a polyurethane with color?
Colored polyurethane combines the beauty of a shaded stain with the tough durability of polyurethane — in one step. Lighter than paint but less forgiving, polyurethane requires careful preparation of the table before it’s applied. But it’s worth every step.
Do you sand PolyShades between coats?
This removes any start/stop marks and bubbles. Before applying the second coat, sand with the 220 fine grit sanding paper – very lightly! And then remove sanding dust and apply the second thin coat as you did the first coat. Additional coats can be added to deepen the color.
Should you sand between coats of PolyShades?
Note: Sanding between coats is not necessary, but it will provide a better finish. After a coat has dried, use 220 or 240 grit sandpaper or extra fine steel wool to lightly sand surface. Do not sand the final coat.
Can I apply PolyShades with a roller?
Yes! You can use a roller to apply polyurethane (and definitely should) when working on floors and large furniture. Applying polyurethane using a roller is easier, and the drying time is short. The roller also removes brush marks and prevents over-application on the surface.
Do you have to remove old stain before restaining?
When Previous Layer is a Solid Color Stain
If your deck has a previous layer of solid stain (opaque stain) on it, you will need to remove it if you intend to use a different type of stain, such as a semi transparent deck stain. Applying the latter over solid color stains may not last.
What happens if you stain over stain?
Staining on top of older stain is perfectly fine. You will need to understand your specific project and plan before you begin but staining on top of old stain is fairly simple. As we mentioned earlier, staining on top of old stain works best if you want a darker stain.

Can you apply Minwax polyshades with a rag?
Using a rag to apply stain, you’ll both apply and then remove any excess stain in one step. You have better control as to how much stain you apply and how you distribute it. Using a rag also eliminates the bubbles you get when you apply Polyshades with a brush.

Can you use Polycrylic over polyurethane?
Yes, you can put both water-based and oil-based polyurethane over polycrylic. You can directly apply it over the polycrylic finish. Or you can sand the polycrylic first and then apply the polyurethane to the furniture. Scraping the polycrylic is also an option.
How do you remove Minwax polyshades?
Place a plastic putty knife on the windowsill at a 45-degree angle and push it forward to scrape off the gel and the wood stain. Shake the removed material into a bucket to collect it and repeat the process to remove a much of the gel as possible with the putty knife.
