Water your lawn after applying herbicide
Almost all types of pre-emergent herbicides — organic, synthetic, liquid, or granular — require water to work. You should apply water relatively soon after (within 3-5 days) to ensure the herbicide moves through the soil to the seeds.
How long should I wait after applying pre-emergent?

Early Spring and Fall are the most effective times to apply pre-emergent herbicides. They can be applied throughout the year, and will still prevent new weeds that sprout, however most weeds sprout during spring and fall.
Should I mow before pre-emergent?
Typically, you need to mow your lawn once a week to 2 or 3 inches tall before applying the preemergent. Make sure your lawn mower’s blades are sharp because preemergent herbicides may damage lawns that are already stressed from split stems and subsequent disease.
Will heavy rain wash away pre-emergent?
About 0.5 to 1.0 inch of rain/irrigation is needed to activate most soil-applied herbicides. Too much rain, however, will cause the herbicide to become diluted and leach or wash away.
Can you put down too much pre-emergent?

Will grass seed grow after pre-emergent?
Generally, once a pre-emergent herbicide is put down in the spring, you cannot effectively seed until fall. Technically, you could seed 16 weeks from the application, but that puts you in the hottest part of summer. Seeding is not advisable at that time.
Should I water after fertilizing?
If your lawn gets liquid fertilizer, wait until it dries before watering, about 2-4 hours. If it’s granular fertilizer, water right away. One exception: if you also got spot weed treatments at the same time, wait for that to dry before watering, or the water will wash off the weed killer before it can work.

Can you apply a pre-emergent on wet grass? When applied on wet grass, crabgrass pre-emergent will most likely stick on the leaves. Some products such as Crabgrass Barrier recommend applying it on wet grass. However, you may need to water your lawn soon after putting down the herbicide.

Pre-emergents work like a barrier. Once they’ve been applied and watered into the soil, they will kill sprouting weeds for 6–8 weeks. Some varieties of pre-emergents are selective, meaning they only kill weeds.
Should I water after applying crabgrass preventer?
The preemergent herbicide must be moved off the leaves and down to the soil surface where it is effective. Watering right after application is ideal. The sooner you can water after the product has been applied the better, and the product should be watered in within 24 hours after application at the latest.
